I mostly go for Alternative. I gotta say i'm still old skewl with it though...
most of teh newer bands i cant get into yet... Coheed and Cambria is really the newest band i've come to love and cherish.
Some of my fave groups are them, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, REM, Nine
Inch Nails, Green Day, Counting Crows and Nirvana.
Any good recommenations for newer bands?

REM, Nine Inch Nails, Green Day, Counting Crows and Nirvana,
I can definitly agree to those
and i know what you mean, it feels as though no one is nearly as original as they were.
also i will add alice in chains, they were awesome to bad he died like ages ago
